There are other copies of the coin in two proof sets (below) but I'm not sure if that is included in the mintage above.

Silver Dollar Proof Set - 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 - Mintage: 40,000 (2012)

Fine Silver Proof Set - 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 (2012) Mintage: 20,000

Kind of hard to tell with the small picture. I definitely know nothing about the coin..

I've seen this coin and it doesn't do much for me. Not a history buff like you but 1 image to sum up the war of 1812 - don't know if this is it. History wise I had a Sambro Island Lighthouse for a while. Mintage of only 7500 but the mint isn't sold out even yet. Sometimes low mintage does not translate into popularity. I ended up trading it for a Maple and 1/4 oz Walking Liberty.

I have tried to stay away from anything except bullion. You have some good insights - Thanks! The mintage is too high and it is over priced.

Should have had an image of a burning White House on the front. At least would have been more interesting and a good conversation starter.

Cool idea Travis but our American friends don't realize they lost that war or the real reason why they call it the White House.

Viper, I'm a bit of a history enthusiast as well, and I intend to do more reading on the war of independance. I recently read a Bernard Cornwell novel on the battle of Majabigwaduce in 1779. We won that one!

I've read a few of his books. The saxon tales books. Think I read 4 of em. Lords of the North was one of em.

That was a quick reply! Yeah, I've also read 'The Burning Land', about saxons and danes, and his excellent book 'Azincourt' which I highly recommend. The battle of Agincourt is an amazing story. Much more to it than the battle itself.
You're American aren't you Mojo?

I have not read this author before, I studied history in university as an elective. I'm going to the library to look for the 'Azincourt' on your recommendation. Thanks!

Yes, I am. One of my calculus professors introduced me to his books a while back. He(my professor) used to be an English/literature professor, had his master's in it. Was a total book nut. He introduced me to bernard cornwell and I introduced him to George R R Martin's Game of Thrones(this was before even a whisper of the tv series had come out).

Viper, well worth the effort. The book is based on the experiences of the fictitious longbow archer Nicholas Hook. There has been talk about making a film adaptation of the book but to my great disappointment it hasn't happened yet. It would be an amazing film for sure.

You are right about that and the other interesting things is there is a $5.00 difference that is a little weird!

RE: RCM 1812-2012 War of 1812 Coin - Viper_99 - 05-08-2012 09:59 AM

Are you a Canadian NP?

RE: RCM 1812-2012 War of 1812 Coin - vonredbird - 05-09-2012 12:01 AM

i bought three of the silver proof sets. not because i'm a history buff but because the war coin, penny, loonie and toonie are selling individually combined for $220. this leaves me a quarter, dime and nickel for $4. this set will be hot in years to come. that penny is unreal...pink gold and the last year issue. penny alone will be worth a couple hundo in a few years. the war coin alone... not interested. imo

RE: RCM 1812-2012 War of 1812 Coin - Viper_99 - 05-09-2012 09:28 AM

That is good take on the Silver Proof Sets. I never considered that play. Thanks for your insight Vonredbird!

RE: RCM 1812-2012 War of 1812 Coin - dragonfly5 - 05-09-2012 03:47 PM

OK - so totally not planning on this - just purchased 2 of these proof sets. Hope I can flip one or both at a good markup.

RE: RCM 1812-2012 War of 1812 Coin - Viper_99 - 05-09-2012 05:43 PM

There selling on ebay "buy now" for $10.00 more than the mint.

Ebay

I'm a total chicken when it comes to flipping. Wait until they run out at the mint and the price will go up. I got an email from the mint indicating they were 87% sold.

RE: RCM 1812-2012 War of 1812 Coin - Mojofabulous - 05-09-2012 06:19 PM

do they sell the penny individually?
