Tea
Not Marijuana, you old hippy, tea!
Are you a tea-totaler like me? I was introduced a few years back into Taiwan Green Mountain Tea it is rolled and dried tea no fermentation. very mild and low in caffeine. But if you worry about Caffeine here is some tips when making tea. 1) never use tea bags. always buy your tea in bulk or loose leaf. 2) Buy a small traditional Chinese tea pot. It make about one US cup per pot. I found a larger one so I don't have to fill my pot three times to get a coffee mug of tea. they are found in china towns but don't buy whole traditional tea sets as you only need the pot. If you can't find a small tea pot then get a tea ball and follow the tea bag instructions below. 3) Place a small amount of tea in the cup of your palm (it is about a teaspoons worth) then put it in your small tea pot and pour hot water on and when filled pour your tea immediately into your cup. I do this 3x to get a coffee mug worth of tea. you are ready to drink. The fast pour on and off of the hot water brings out less caffeine and a milder taste. tea bags are way to concentrated and cause a lot of tantic (SP?) acid. Oolong is a green tea that is either not fermented or slightly fermented then roasted in a pan to keep it from fermenting. You can spend anywhere from $5 to $20 per 250mg/quarter kilo also comes in 600mg I found this cost less to buy only $12 in Cebu. Taiwan Mountain tea is a raw tea rolled into little balls called "POOR" in Mandarin Chinese. We have all sorts of Jokes on who rolls the leaves but that is for another time. this one cost anywhere from $20 to $35 per 250mg/quarter kilo. they have three leaf variety and five leaf. Black tea's often come with a flower added as they can be bitter. Jasmine tea $15- $40 per 650mg, is naturally sweet Othesumus Tea $12-$35 650mg, is fruity Ceyleon Tea $6 for 120mg and up. the one I bought was orange flavored. I don't care for it. Brew it fast. Then there is white tea. The leaves are cut premature and though it can have an unusual flavor you do not want to brew it to long you wont be able to drink it. this like Ceyleon tea needs to be brewed really fast. this one too can be plain or Jasmine. $6 for 120mg Tea bags don't really show you the quality of tea you are buying. But if Lipton or other brand of bagged tea is all you can afford here are some brewing tips to get the most out of your tea bag. 1) never pour the hot water directly over the tea bag. But instead pour the water in your mug and dip the bag into the water two or three times. It will get dark quickly just experiment with it until you can get a mild to medium flavor. You will appreciate the flavor of the tea more that way and then from one tea bag you can get up to 5 coffee mugs of tea. 2) don't squeeze the tea bag into your cup it will make it bitter let it drip until almost stopping to drip then place it on a small plate and save for your next cup. There are some health benefits to tea. Green tea has more antioxidants to counter free radicals, Black teas detoxify liver, kidney and blood, and all teas help to hydrate the Colon which is never a bad thing. Become a tea-totaler and enjoy a cup of tea today! Visit my Blog New articles as I can Post them @ http://chettesblog.wordpress.com |

RE: Tea
I'm having a cuppa tea right now (as per most afternoons). It's a great "pick-you-up" before an afternoon jog, bike ride, or walk.
I've been buying it in bulk for years...and prefer the Chinese Gunpowder Green. I think it's the strongest of the green teas (caffeine)...so drinking it too late in the day could be bad if you need to get to bed at a certain time. To each their own...but I don't care for your preparation methods myself...as I prefer the "by the cup" method of preparing tea. I use the mesh spoon infuser (stainless...spring-loaded) and you can fill one side...or depending on the cup size...a little less, and allow for expansion when the gunpowder pellets unravel themselves. I also buy creamed honey in 50# buckets....it sweetens it up and cuts the "bite" of a really strong tea. I also use it for adding to oatmeal...so it serves other purposes for buying in bulk quantities....sort of a "Prep" item really. I'm sure it could be used for a number of other things in cooking....and it lasts forever...so that's nice. As far as tea goes....the green has serious medicinal properties. Some have even claimed to have cured their cancer with green tea....much in the same way people use the cannabanoids from Hash/MJ oil to thwart the spread of cancer found early on. It saddens me about Fukushima....as alot of tea comes from Japan. People should be real leery about anything coming outta Japan these days. I feel their products are probably tainted by now...and the radiation leeched into the earth via rainfall has made their products dangerous. Tea is notorious for sponging chemicals outta the ground...at least that's what I've read. I've heard that post Fukushima disaster....Hillary Clinton entered into an agreement with the Japanese govt. to continue accepting produce, beef, etc. (food products from Japan). These are scary times for shoppers. I'm gonna have to relearn my tea purchasing. |

RE: Tea
The only type of tea I like Yogi Egyptian Licorice tea. It has organic: licorice root, cinnamon bark, orange peel, ginger root, cardamom seed, black pepper, and clove bud. The only time I care to drink it is at night because it is very calming and it makes me sleepy.

RE: Tea
Agsham,
The method I learned was from an old Chinese guy and it eliminates the "bite" altogether, it is the ancient traditional way of making tea that goes back 3,000 years. Even the pots are designed the same way. You can get those outside Beijing they range in cost red clay are the lowest price, then Brown clay a bit higher but black clay will cost you. a cheap end black clay cost around $100USD. I also have one small pot from Japan. The "poor" type of tea is what you are calling Chinese gunpowder tea. That is also the way the Taiwanese three leaf and five leaf tea is done, rolled into little balls. Nothing wrong with using a infuser spoon or a tea ball they work about the same. Some people put the tea in a pot then pour it through a small screen place on the cup. For me making tea strong you can't taste the tea, then you need to add honey, raw sugar and some add milk to kill the "Bite" or bitterness. I can't pronounce the name off hand but I will get you the name of a city province outside Hong Kong where you can buy bulk teas. It is said they have over 1,000 types of tea there. I have not verified that but if the Lord supplies for a weekend to Hong Kong for the Missus and me I will check it out. Ceyleon tea is said to detox the lungs, liver, kidneys ad blood. The Chinese say if you smoke and drink you should drink Ceyleon Black Tea. Drink tea and be happy Visit my Blog New articles as I can Post them @ http://chettesblog.wordpress.com |

(04-28-2012 06:12 PM)Chette Wrote: Agsham, Hahaha....I'm not overly concerned about taste, regarding the Chinese Gunpowder Green. Crunchy particulates, grains, granules, x-trees, dark, bitter, as potent as possible is what I'm shooting for. It has me spinning like a top....so much so, that you often have no choice but to get outside and get some exercise. I just got back a little bit ago from a long jog. My cooking is not exactly normal either....heavily spiced often times with things to aid in joint "recoop", medicinals, and sickness fighters. I am interested in other teas though....for the chance to drink something based on taste and enjoyment....that would be "choice"....and I think a really nice change once in awhile. Great thread....keep the ideas coming....pikers like me could use a little refinement to smooth out the rough edges. Thanks again. |

I am ready for my jalapeno eating contest with my little sister when we get back to the states for furlough. I practice with these little red chilies they have here in the Philippines that they call "Labuyo", these little puppies are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long and are killer hot but the sting only last about 10 minutes. enjoy Visit my Blog New articles as I can Post them @ http://chettesblog.wordpress.com |

RE: Tea
made boneset tea from the boneset herb I have in the garden today. Tried it for a nasty cold. It is really bitter even with honey and salt. Drunk about half a cup. Then used the rest as a gargle. Seemed to help my throat feel better.
Later the same evening I feel a little better. Make a batch of lemon balm (also from the garden) got my brothers (who are also fighting colds) to try it out. Is much better tasting. also supposed to be good for cold/flu. http://www.herballegacy.com/Lemon_Balm.html |

RE: Tea
Red rose tea is not to to be confused with the south african rooibos red bush tea which is quite nice.
I have tried rooibos, mate, green tea, herbal and more, but old habits die hard and I continue to drink builder's tea which is made by plonking a black teabag into a cup, then sugar to taste, then hot water and lastly the milk. Proper job. I might try the yogi tea, but knowing me, I will sono go off it and revert to type. Really intrigued as to why you would sweat heavily when drinking ceylon dust tea. I like my tea strong so I might like this one. Finally Chette mentioned caffeine. I can tell you now that there is very little caffeine in tea as I like my tea strong but my coffee really weak as strong coffee makes me go really hyper and jizzy, which I hate. |

RE: Tea
Have you ever attended a tea ceremony? What was the atmosphere like and how did you feel during the experience? Watching the preparation, pageantry and performance of a tea ceremony, whether it is that of Asian, Indian, British or Russian persuasion, is like engaging in a romantic interlude before reaching the best moment of anticipation and satisfaction. Normally, a tea event is conducted in a tearoom, often set apart in a tea garden, to capture the essence of cleanliness and quietude. The ambiance is soothing.
The host of the tea ceremony is trained and very intuitive to the tiniest of preparatory and serving details. Movements are carefully orchestrated, very fluid and meticulously performed. Characteristically, the atmosphere is not large, but in a small and intimate setting. Tea rituals are diverse among many cultures. For example, Asian tea events vary in Japan, China, Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Tibet, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand cultures, having specific names according to the season or time of day. The type of event is also based on the tea that is being served. The preparation and serving of tea is an experience beyond the history of the Camellia Sinensis leaf accidentally falling into hot water, thus giving birth to the hot tea revolution. Instruments used in various tea ceremonies are necessary with each part of the preparation and presentation process. During the ritual, the placement of every tea element is carefully positioned in a specific order. The serving bowls and utensils are cleaned with boiling water that is gently scooped out of a pot or iron teakettle. A wastewater bowl is used to discard water once tea bowls are rinsed. There is a science to the order and spirit of preparing tea. This process is not rushed, but each moment is savored. Gracefulness and meditation reflect aspects of Zen Buddhism influence when it comes down to the earnestness and romance for the art of tea preparation during a tea ceremony. Simon French |
