Solar Silver
BrotherJohnF,
Could you please do an analysis of how many ounces of silver it would take to make the solar panels to supply just 10% of the world energy needs.
I decided to give this a shot. I think the results are interesting. Please excuse the lack of references. Mostly from a Kitco article.
Silver used for solar panels 2009, 20.9 million oz. New solar energy online 2009 7.2gigawatts. That's about 3million oz/gigawatts. or 3billion oz per terawattt. One terawatt is about 1/15th of total global energy use. Current solar energy contribution is about .2%. That means the solar energy industry is going to need a huge amount of silver over the next 10-20 years.
