I was reading the message board on the SLV ETF and came across two different postings. One appeared to be a basher and the other more realistic. The articles are within 3 days of each other and appear contradictory.

You have the right idea.The article says two different things both true.First it says that compared to january 2012,the sales for SAEs in february 2012 have dropped.It also says that compared to the year 2011,Jan. and Feb. sales,the sales in 2012,Jan. and Feb. for SAEs are lower so far.They go on to say that the reason is the higher price of silver which in MHO isnt relevant since the price in 2011 and 2012 concerning the first two months,is pretty close.
When the new SAEs are first released in a year,there is a rush to buy for various reasons,such as wanting to get the new issue asap,and wanting to qualify for a first strike designation.So it follows that after the initial rush to buy,subsequent months will have lower sales figures.As the price rises and falls,the amount of ounces bought will change with that.For true comparisons of 2011 sales to 2012 sales you need to wait for december.Hope this was helpful.

Your right about February sales always fall off. However this year the difference in the numbers of eagle sales is really large. Why such a drastic drop?

Assuming the numbers are even accurate. Almost all government statistics are manipulated, we all should know this by now. Let's say the numbers are accurate though, it could mean any number of things and as it's only been two months worth of data so it's too early to make any guesses.
