Silver Britannia announcement-.999 in the future!

Currently the britannia line of coins are not .999 purity. Soon, they will be. According to the royal british mint.

That is exciting, thanks. I wasn't a fan of the past two years. 2012 wasn't very unique and 2011 was ugly. I'm looking forward to a cool looking 2013 and if it changes to 999, that just makes it even cooler.

Brilliant! Thanks for the news Mojo, was looking to buy aload of Britianias as i live in the UK, but was also put off with the 95% pure silver (even though theres still 1 troy oz pre coin). I think i will continue to grow my stack with dragons, eagles, pandas etc... and look at stacking Britainias in 2013 depending on what happens with the silver price before ofcourse

Thanks Mojo. Have always been interested in getting some Brits but haven't gotten around to it for a few reasons. .999 Britannias seem like a match made in heaven though.

That is very exciting, I'm a fan of Britannias. I order three from APMEX and because the are not .999 they are not consider bullion. Therefore as Canadians we must pay tax on their value. This is good news thanks Mojo for the news.

The whole idea of Britannias was that they used 'Britannia silver' - 95.8. I liked them in part because they had their own unique composite, perhaps this will make the 95.8% ones even more collectible in the future. That, coupled with the speculation that they will be making a lot more (more on par with maples and eagles?) than their usual 100,000/year are good signs for the ones that are out now. On the plus side, the purity queens won't have a reason to snub these when they are 999.

well i guess that means the price will go up even more ! currently they are minted from "Britannia silver" only about 95% pure silver and the rest is copper and other junk....

but how much does the Royal mint sell them for ......................£57.50 plus P & P that's $93.14 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT???

I can not actually believe anyone in their right mind would purchase from the royal mint in the UK ......

They may be .958 in purity and a little bit more expensive than other coins you mention..... They're also 100% Capital Gains Tax exempt!!!

Thanks mojo.I began to collect them in 2010 and slowly have worked my way backwards.I see .999 as a plus.As for the price,apparently the value of the USD as opposed to the pound gives the US buyers a bit of a discount.When I went on the Royal mint site,they were selling the 2012s for $57 and change while I can buy one from apmex or provident for just over $38 and thats just fine with me.

To be fair buying your Britannias direct from the Royal Mint is the last thing you want to be doing.

so, .999 and unlimited mintage in future? Realistically the prices should come down as these will no longer be numismatic.

Last time I checked 1 pound could buy 1.62 US dollars. The Brits are getting killed by their own austerity measures. I bought 3 Britannias for ~$37.00 last week. Someone has to pay for Greece and the other Euro problems.

These are all reasons I think the 1997-2012 silver Britannias will do very well in the future.

By comparison, 100,000/year will look like a crazy low mintage if they start minting 25million+++ a year.

The blog is fairly vague about when they are starting this, next year I guess? 2013?

You pay a premium of about £3 over a Maple but your capital gains tax exempt with these coins.... This makes it an ideal UK stacker coin if the price goes crazy!

Yes, its not good. Im in uk and I wouldnt touch britannias with a bargepole. Im buying maples and eagles and paying almost half that £57 for one and that includes tax and insured shipping. I just emailed the royal mint and asked them to justify their prices. If I get a reply I will post it here.

hmmm more cost cutting by the Royal Mint. Taking out the copper from the Britannia's.

1 Oz of silver is 1 OZ of silver, but worth even more if the coin contains copper as well!

Sterling Silver (92.% 0.925), Britannia Silver (95.84% 0.958) were devised so that coins and other artefact's wouldn't be so soft as to get damaged. Don't be fooled, they are not thinking of the Bullion Markets, coins have never been part of Bullion in the UK, I would never sell my Britannia's at Silver Spot.

If a coin has 95.84% of silver in it and the rest is copper and the coin has 1 Oz of silver in it, then the coins weight is higher than 1 Oz. (32.39 grams as opposed to 31.1 grams).

Yes Canadian Maples are 99.99% silver, but boy you got to handle them with kid gloves. Same goes for 22ct gold. I would never want to own a 99.9% gold coin. Its way to soft.

Who in their right mind would melt down a silver coin, its worth more as a coin than the metal. The only silver Bullion I regard as Bullion are Silver Bars.

Trust the British, we been doing silver for a long long time. Pure silver is a bad idea. My personal preference, I love 90% American coins. They are great, I got coins that have been in circulation since 1922, and they still look great!...I fell a Canadian maple....hmmm dents don't look good.

As for sterling silver I got coins from 1816, and they look as fine and fresh as the day they were minted.

Also, you tried doing a ping test on pure silver? A lot harder finding harmonics on pure silver compared to lesser silver. Maples sound dead.

I need to get my mitts on 2012 Silver Britannia's, 100,000 low mintage and the last coin that is 0.958, tell you, numismatics wet dream.....

Also they are changing the composition of the Gold Britannia's from 22ct (91.7% 0.917) gold to 99.9% gold. More cost cutting, taking out the silver!

From 1990 the coins contained silver. so a 1oz Gold Britannia post 1990 contained 91.7% gold and 8.3% silver. This would make the coin composition 31.1 grams (1oz) of gold and as a kicker 2.58 grams of silver!
