Not eating from the Grocery store
I want to see how many people actually do what they can to support their local produce and farms versus how many people still buy food from the grocery store or walmart. I try to get whatever I can local, from raw milk, to the grass fed beef/poultry and eggs, vegetables and fruit. I have been trying to be strict about eating what is in season and only try to stock up on the things that I really can not get local and what I believe can not be tampered with genetically modified anything, such as rice, beans, and dry goods. At times it is not always convenient but I feel a better connection with the food I feed my family and I know it is a great deal healthier. I can feel the difference from eating fresh organic natural food versus store bought, my energy has increased so much. What do you guys do???

RE: Not eating from the Grocery store
I don't make any effort to buy local. I just pick and choose based on the ingedients list. Over the last six years when i started eating gluten free to more organic and now juicing, i have seen first hand how the consumer's purchasing decisions really do transform the grocery isle to their will.

RE: Not eating from the Grocery store
In the summer I bet we get up to 85% local, organic, sustainable.
We rock the small backyard garden, buy 100% of our meat, eggs, milk from local farmers and try to get the rest from the farmer's market during the growing season. I used to buy jugs of spring water from the supermarket, but now I filter at home. No need to pass within a country mile from one of those cesspools anymore.

RE: Not eating from the Grocery store
I try to support local farmers as well. The problem is in Alaska, there isn't much Chicken/Pork farming, and I like to diversify my meats (god that sounds bad) The best way to do that here is wild game, which a lot of people aren't big on. Moose, Caribou, Bear, and Fish.
I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend. -Thomas Jefferson To achieve Liberty and Peace two powerful Human emotions must be overcome. Number one is Envy. Number two is Intolerance. - Ron Paul I believe Banking Institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies - Thomas Jefferson People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both. - Benjamin Franklin |

RE: Not eating from the Grocery store
i support local big time local farmers sell me pigs and steers most of my family gets meat that way cheep easy to do man nothing like eating porter house or 90 percent beef for under 2.00 a pound. I recall my wife looking at me one day with a plate full of porter house saying what happened to anything else were eating to much steak I smiled and said its cheep. I raise a garden in summer in the back yard not enough to sustain my familey but theres a local produce auction 15 20 minutes from here and with a preasure cooker we get a long way with it id say we spend maybe 2 grand a year at the grocery gotta have milk bread chese and the like to

For people who aren't able to do this a simple rule of thumb is this. If the food is at the center isles of the store and not in freezers or coolers that means is is filled with preservatives. If it is on the edges of the store: produce, meats, dairy, etc. It has to be eaten or it spoils and is therefore more likely better for you. Not a perfect rule, but at least of some help. RE: Not eating from the Grocery store
here in the UK its generally just too expensive to do the local thing, unless in the countryside which im not. Organic I don't do since most of it in the big supers is just a gimmick anyway... i just keep it fresh where meat is concerned and Veg and fruit that comes loose not pre packaged...
Nice tip there BJF about positioning the fresh IS always along the edges ... now i know why

RE: Not eating from the Grocery store
I eat mostly all organic food from my local COOP. In summer, I hit 2 farmers markets per week. Food is actually VERY cheap when buying at farmers markets. I also grow lots organic tomato's in the summer/fall. I eat so many of them, I almost get sick of them. Maybe eat around 20 per day in the fall...they are free. I also eat lots of eggs that we get from a local organic farm couples place.

RE: Not eating from the Grocery store
Here in Miami there is no local farming. So I just shop at whole foods and small local grocery shop. Not many options here. I hate Miami
