There are quite a few UK Users on here. If I remmeber correctly, one way to avoid VAT was to buy legal tender currency. Since it is legal tender and not a collectible, it isn't subject to VAT.

hi thanks for reply,

I am looking for the mint/ online delivery companies within the UK. I received advice for 'goldmadesimple' & 'bullionvault' though the former only deals in gold & the latter requires a higher amount paid upfront, so I was hoping to find a user who knows where I can just order small amounts through someone reliable (i.e. not ebay)?

Welcome to the forum Semiotically. You have made a great start by the way as there seems to be a tradition here of having weird poster names and yours does not disappoint.
First of all, avoid the Royal Mint and the London Mint Office especially. They're a rip off.
I will send you a private message and you can join the 'UK Fight Club'. It will appear as brotherjohnf in your email. You will then be in the loop.
Kyshym is not in the loop as he's Ameican Wink , besides America is a much better place to stack silver.
How did you get to this enlightened state where you want to buy silver as in the UK it is very much in the sidelines, a long forgotten treasure.
The Brits sure do love their paper.

By the way, you probably should have started this thread in the silver section of precious metals discussion.
The general consensus here is to have physical in hand. If you don't hold it you don't own it.
I have a big ass safe at home but I would rather use that as a decoy. I also have a fair amount of silver in Switzerland with Goldmoney.
At least I hope I do. To the Yanks that have all theirs at home and who also own a load of guns and ammo, I say to them: 'What good are your guns when you're not at home', so you can never really have 100% security.

Indeed, I am not in the loop of places to buy from over there. I thought I remembered one of our UK users saying they avoided VAT by purchasing Legal Tender, and not collector coins.

Was that piece right?

I got into silver as I'm 27 & it's quite apparent that when people like me are needing to work all hours of the day, for 25 years or more to pay off a mortgage, despite all the technological advances & innovations, there must be a whole lot of ineffieciency & slack somewhere in the system.
Looking in to how things work you find the banks speculate on housing to draw out mortgages to create more interest etc. Clearly not fair & maybe equally importantly is unsustainable for much longer e.g. I'm not willing to 'sign-up' for this... +one lol

Yes, and all the banks are interested in is sucking you dry, so I fight back by leaving the barest minimum in my bank account.
Shimmy, your memory does indeed serve you correct and it is a case of the coins being legal tender. It would be nice if all the UK dealers used that arguement. Oh, and God forbid I leave out the Canucks Viper. In future I will probably say our north american cousins.

What does this mean: If you see my pay, my pay Canada. Will say a my friends, that I remember them. ??? I ran it through an online translator. I'm from Western Canada and don't speak French.

Viper, I thought all canadians knew that song, which is called mon paye Canada - My country Canada. It's about someone who leaves Canada's shores and is very homesick.
Translating the line I posted:
'If you go to my country Canada, tell my friends that I remember them'. It is very melancholy, obviously of Quebecan origin.

Sorry, my mistake. The song is called Un Canadien errant.
Nana Mouskouri sings it particularly well. Edited one or two mis-spellings.

Cheers guys,

hi, I understand where your coming from, it is difficult in UK to get good deals but I can tell you where I get my silver from if it helps?
I have occassionally got from ebay for the odd few coins in the last month for around £23 - £24 - maples, eagles, phils, etc but its a lot of time and messing about tbh and its getting more difficult as people turn to the silver market. In te last 2 weeks I have seen nothing under £26!
So plan B.....I looked at Estonia and Norway at 0% vat but mark ups of 15% - 20% above spot price plus posting and insurance so no joy there!Sad
So plan C ..... I did my research for a couple of weeks and found 3 good dealers and am getting below £24 / 1oz coins now. Bearing in mind I stick to common staple coins - Eagles, Phils, Noahs Arks, etc...
Dealer no 1 is coininvestdirect.com - post starts from around £11 from memory but you can get at around £23.50ish so may not be for you as I buy in quite high quantities. You can get at 7%vat i just found out but £85 delivery plus £10ish admin charge, so orders over £2000 only apply.

Dealer no 2 is Highspectrading.co.uk - just got some eagles from them for around £24each including post and paypal fees. yes he takes paypal to!.... I ordered 20 for this price, but I think he does them individually for around £26.

goldsilverbelgium.wordexpress.com......This guy is a seller on ebay to, however I have started to buy direct from him. Yvan is a sound guy to chat to, he understands the currency game and is great for small orders. Its a little informal in his set up but I like the way he works it quite personal. Anyway I just got 15 mooses from him as a trial to make sure all works out which I am sure it will from past ebay purchases. Its a little awkward....basically you email him, he comes back with a price you say ye or nay then if its ok he invoices you with a paypal request for payment, or a bank transfer. Then you pay and he posts. He will do smaller orders to suit your needs but I just got 15 canadian mooses for £23.50ish last week including posting.

so there you go.....hope this helps.
I would be happy to sell off a few coins to yourself if you wanted 1 or 2 at a time......but by the time you pay by paypal its about another 3.6%ish from memory plus post cost which will come to around £25+ a coin.

Hope you can make some use of this? If you find out anything better let us know.
What I can say is I am pretty lucky as I dont have a mortgage any more so I can risk maybe a little more but from all my research I would buy as much now as possible as it looks like the next few moths could see increases in spot price due to the forthcoming money printing in US (QE3).
Hope all this makes sense buddy, but its time to act.
regards Ste

Trying to digest everything at the moment, waiting for reply from brotherjohnf, think I need more reputation to deserve one-2-one form this guy though... if this were Youtube I'd say .like & subscribe Wink Once I'm more set in my silverbug niche I'll see if my advice is any better & worth returning,
cheers.
