If I won a million dollars..

If you won a million dollars today... what would you do with it? And.. to make it interesting... you cannot buy silver with it. Obviously, we all would buy silver with it.. so that cannot be your answer...

Okay.. now that I am thinking about it, 1 mil. is nothing. I should have said 20 mil. or something.

I would put a down payment on a private island...

If we had a million dollars John would quit his job and have more time to spend on the Blog and other things. We would move back to where our families live. You're right, one million makes a difference but it's not life-changing.

Twenty million on the other hand would change everything. We would leave the country maybe to Argentina to Doug's Gulch. We'd buy a house for us and for my parents. Doug's Gulch is probably the only type of place that we would want to go tat could entice them to leave the country, too. They don't know about Doug's Gulch, though.

I'd hire a housekeeper and a gardner.

Oh yeah, I'm afraid I would have to spend $10 million on silver.

That would be a very small Island.

I would pay out the balance of my mortgage (<$100,000.00) as this is the only debt I have. I would take my wife on a trip across Europe, The UK (our homeland) and parts of Africa. Half of the balance would be split between my 2 adult children and the other half would be invested in Jr. Mining shares in the Canadian market through a self directed bank account I already have in place. I assume when you said we cant buy silver you meant gold as well, so I didn't go there.

Wow.. you have really thought this out! Africa would be a dream place for me to visit. I am a huge Wilbur Smith fan and love all of his books.

I have also been to UK and was amazed. I was only 17 at the time, but loved it. So historic and old world. People there really do drive like crap.. sorry, but there were accidents all over the place! Tried to cross a "pelican" and almost got killed by an "articulated lorry"! LOL!

Doug's Gulch? Sounds like a Dundee "walk-a-bout" type place... Maybe a housekeeper that could cook grits and make nice flower arrangements?

That's the beauty of the UK. As you go up into the Scottish Highlands life kind of changes. It truely is a different place, the people are not like any you have, or will ever meet in the Western World, genuine, honest, generous to a falt. The ruins and the history with the castles is amazing and the view from the castles is breath taking. You can almost touch the clouds.
Africa has been on the radar for a while now. I would love to spend 5-7 days in the jungle running with the wild life, I don't think there is anything that could compare to that and it is something we are going to have a serious look at in the near future.

Go travelling again taking my family with me for a year

Buy some land with 300k in Asia build a place on it with 150k set up a solar energy/water off the grid system etc. Irrigate into rice fields, fruit and get some small livestock, fish farm etc with another 200k. 100k to Employ some the local village community to setting up/working on same & plow back 50% of the net takings into growing the farm/community. 150k on equipment truck etc and the remaining 100k setting up as a 1% interest small loans business for the village locals in their own currency. Generally get involved, go native and settle in to the community.

$20 million ? now your talking, the basics would be the same only bigger but the possibilities are endless. Travel for 5 years or so with the family seeing every inch of our planet ive ever wished to see and spending time in cultures ive always wanted to learn about first hand.

My father took a sabbatical to teach in Bristol for a year, so I went to visit my parents there when I was younger. We did drive all around and visited the castles which just amazed me. There is NOTHING like that here. You can walk into a place and the history hits you in the face. I was only 17 then and I wish I knew then, what I know now. I would have appreciated it a lot more.

On Africa: Wilbur Smith's books are older from the 60's or 70's?..., but they are great stories set in the times of the discovery of Africa, the trade routes, pirates, the power of the shipping companies, the international play of goverments of the time etc. They are Epic stories and he can spin one heck of a tale...

It's actually called Gault's Gulch. It's a community of expatriats in Cayete, Argentina founded by Doug Casey. It's a community of Libertarian/Anarcho-capitalist types who hope to sit out the global collapse in relative safety and comfort in Cafayate, Argentina. They are suppodedly a self-sustaining community of people. Some people live there year round and some part-time. I understand it's quite expensive. Certainly out of our reach at this time. But I would like to live in an expat community rather than just be on our own, I think it would be safer and more comfortable for me to adjust to.

edit: Hmmm,I wonder if I could get a job there as a maid?

I would definitely leave this country for the best hideaway tropical but not overly hot and humid coastal country or island I could find that's not filled with corruption. Nice sandy beaches, snorkeling, and while snorkeling bring home supper....lobster!

Of course, my kids, would always be welcome and could live with me it they want to leave the country too!

Ahhh, those simple pleasures! A margarita on the beach in the heat of the day, soaking up the rays, wading in the ocean, being knocked down by waves, and getting sand inside your swimsuit. I need a tropical vacation!

I was thinking living there and doing that everyday....but now you've got me thinking about a vacation!!!! Except for sand in the swimsuit I'm with ya all the way!!!!! I seriously haven't had a vacation for many years....I get laid off every year in the winter....but now I definitely have an idea for next year......
