Symbolism

Dickens makes considerable use of symbolism. The many symbols Oliver faces are primarily good versus evil, with evil continually trying to corrupt and exploit good, but good winning out in the end. The novel is also shot through with a related motif, obesity, which calls attention to the stark injustice of Oliver's world. When the half-starved child dares to ask for more, the men who punish him are fat. A remarkable number of the novel's characters are overweight.

Apparently the atrocities happened over 6 years ago in Zaire and the perpetrator of the atrocities fled into hiding in the Congo. U.S. military logic says.. we need to land in Zaire, so we can march into the Congo.

China has made investments in central Africa in small scale operations almost Mom and Pop is size. Much of which is simply picking over slag piles the Empires of the world have left behind. Much like the small carrion birds picking at the last fibers left on the bones of a dead beast.

No doubt there has been an increase of "prospecting" to find new resources of wealth. What we are seeing is the Lioness (Great Britain) and her Cubs (US) returning to the site of the kill and shooing the birds away. "We have left this because it was not fit to eat, but we will not let you eat what is left either!"
