Hiya, Englander here
I buy a little gold every month and was looking for advice What's the best investment Buy the more popular coins British Sovereigns, Krugerrands, Gold Eagles etc with a lower fineness of .9167 or go for lesser known coins like an Australian Nugget at .999 fineness? Which matters most? |

RE: Does fineness matter?
Purity doesn't really matter to me. Premium vs how much I want the particular coin matters most. Often that means a PAMP or a 50 Peso.

RE: Does fineness matter?
With Gold its how recognised the coins are, everyone knows a sovereign! Also they are CGT exempt.

RE: Does fineness matter?
Canadian gold coins are .9999 pure. I think as long as it is recognizable people will accept it. I also agree with abreik that premium is a big consideration.

RE: Does fineness matter?
Most gold coins, say gold eagles may have a fineness less than .9999 but they are heavier so that an ounce of gold is in them.To me a fineness of .9999 isnt impressive as opposed to a full ounce of a popular coin.

RE: Does fineness matter?
I have a few goldcoins of every kind actually. Some smaller 999s, even 99999s(grrr i wanna open up the sealing and toy around w them, but ofc i wouldnt), but mostly i like my seminumis old sov's, rubles, vreneli's(very nice feel), although my favorite is the rather small Austrian 1 Dukat a very thin coin which have had the same design since 1612(.986 purity).
I had little logic when buying them, i wanted to have diversity that i knew, other from that i went with what felt nice to buy just that day. Every different coin strike gives its special feel actually,.. at least to me. Sov's and vreneli's just have an aura of high liquidation A double eagle is a very powerful coin a panda is so bright and shiny, beautiful! also sealed though in a simple plastic together with some small bit of paper with some Chinese symbols at it ![]() Theres ofc a lot of stuff out there which i dont have layed my hands on yet, and theres some stuff i have that i dont like and i probably gonna trade but it doesn't feel important to mention those. ..and I'm no expert, this is just my take on it. Good luck! |

I've often thought about this question and really like your answer. It never occured to me that there's still an ounce of gold in a .999 or even say a .9167 or whatever coin and that it's heavier than a purer .9999 because of impurities....the big thing is there is still an ounce of gold in the coin to me. At least I think there is. I haven't researched this question but I'm assuming that you're thinking is correct Mike. If this is true, I feel much better about purchasing less pure gold coins as long as there's still exactly one once of gold in them and in extension the same would go for silver coins too. |

RE: Does fineness matter?
One point that could be important for the North American folks among us.
From a random Canadian metals dealer: What are the taxes on my coins? There are NO Canadian taxes on the bullion coins or bars that we sell, as long as they are 99.5% pure gold or 99.9% pure silver. Any other coins that do not meet these standards are taxable at 13% HST. Most of the coins we sell meet these standards except the American Eagle coin and the African Krugerrand. http://goldcoinscanada.blogspot.com/p/faq.html |

RE: Does fineness matter?
If you buy britannias and sovereigns your capital gains tax exempt here in the UK... If Gold and Silver goes crazy in price why would you pay 40% to government when you don't have to?
But!! I have got Aussy and Canadian coins as well... I love the Queen

RE: Does fineness matter?
I love gold coins, adore them. Today I ordered my first gold sovereign (2012) can't wait to receive it, nice design.
Nope, fineness doesn't matter to me either, not at all. At the moment I have britannias and fractional krugerrands and I would love to have a gold buffalo in my collection. |

RE: Does fineness matter?
its important to be aware of a coins spread and premium. rather than just the finess. If one wanna play the GSR thing, a maple for instance get you good return on resale vs buying if you have to sale fast..

RE: Does fineness matter?
liquidity matters more than fineness. American eagles are the most liquid gold in the united states. Followed by maples and krugs.
