You can take steps to secure your computer and protect your privacy. Here are some of the more important steps to consider. Install and use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a free download from Microsoft and works as good, if not better, than the subscription-based anti-virus programs. Disable file and print sharing. Disable unnecessary services. Particularly those with remote in their name (i.e remote registry). Configure your Window's firewall to drop all incoming connections. Enable Window's Data Execution Prevention. Disable Net BIOS over TCPIP. Configure your browser's tracking protection. Know what programs are running in the background and what programs are installed and check them often to ensure malicious programs haven't been installed. Install only programs that you use. Purchase a registry cleaner/system maintenance program and run it often. PC Tools Registry Mechanic is a good one for about $30 a year. Ensure your system is configured to download the latest security updates from Microsoft. Configure disk defragmenter to run often. Turn your computer off when your not using it. If you're storing your PM inventory on your computer you may want to download and install 7-Zip. It's a free zip program that allows you to encrypt and password protect your inventory and other sensitive documents.
Google Windows hardening for simple instructions to secure your system. Create a system restore point prior to starting any modifications. Don't be a J6P. |

You are not being tracked except to provide information as to ad impressions, clicks, and other statistics. Most of that is to see what type of advertising my readers respond to best. Unlike others, I believe in the advertising model. I always watch the ads and click the ads on other channels when they are interesting to me. Why shouldn't some of this money be diverted to the alternative media? I hate the charge for newsletter subscription model when there's a way to reach the public with free information. Also, many of those sites are listed because that's where the content is coming from. Do you really think that Charles Hugh Smith is tracking your every move? If you can think of a better model I'm all ears. RE: Are you being watched .....?
I know there's no hidden evil agenda behind it, other than more and more targeted advertising..... so im not paranoid i just don't like things going on behind the scenes that you're unaware of, especially when you haven't been asked if you mind it happening !!!!!
Plus i don't believe in advertising....if you've got a good product then people will find you. Not to mention the $32 billion market in selling this crappy info "they" gather on us ........... it almost has a whiff of the banking sector about it .... ok now im being paranoid ! anyway if you carry out the steps as i stated earlier, then you can't be tracked and they can't make money off your every click !

RE: Are you being watched .....?
I do not care if a site I have never been to before has a flash ad for something I looked at a week ago on a different site but it is beyond annoying that after years of going the right direction more intrusive advertising is again on the rise. The two types in particular that are super frustrating are ads you are forced to watch before you can access content and clickjacking popups. In case you don't know clickjacking works I will explain it. Popup blocking had become an issue for aggressive advertisers so they had to come up with a way to bypass it. What they came up with is to use your own clicks to open an ad instead of what you actually clicked on. Your browser (in default configuration) will allow these popups as they appear to be intentional action by the user and as a result are not blocked.
We all have a way we can help advertising evolve into something better for everyone. Think of this. If you wanted to buy a TV would you ask your friends that have recently bought one about theirs or would you seek out what the advertisers had to say about their own products? While it is good to collect data about what you are looking to buy the user experience of your peers trumps all when it comes to what you are willing to pay for. Knowing this everyone should be writing reviews for everything you buy online even if you did not actually buy the item online. As peer review grows the relevancy of unsolicited advertising is diminished and eventually become completely unprofitable. To compete with peer review advertisers will have to create entertaining and informative advertisements that the user seeks out themselves. No matter what people are going to consume goods and services, even with no advertising at all. Advertisers just need to accept that they can be on the leading edge of a new advertising model or they will eventually be forced to play catch up. Eventually the advertisers that pioneer new advertising will experience a surge in results while the ones still forcing people to watch advertising will receive a backlash effect whereby people deliberately consume competing goods and services. As far as the actually privacy part of this goes, educate yourself and take charge of the level YOU want. I do no not all support the idea of putting safety rails on every single part of life. You should never assume that anything is safe. DYODD applies to life, not just silver investing, |

I would have never been a part of this site if there had been a fee. So I am thankful for the model John uses and support the way he is subsidizing the forum and blog. If I am interested in products I will click on them and know that someone is tracking me. That is the nature of the web and I agree with nosirrahx that we need to do our due diligence. RE: Are you being watched .....?
You don't have to justify why you run ads on the site John. It is the only other alternative to charging people a subscription fee for your content. When I first started my website it was just a blog aimed at maybe 50 people, but when traffic picked up and my Hosting company said they would have to upgrade my package to handle it I had to find a way to pay for it. Adsense was and is the best method other than charging a fee to my readers. Now I have enough to pay the fees and any extra left over goes toward the hard work I put in to keeping everything updated. I imagine yours and almost every other webmasters history is pretty similar.
John's correct about the data that the ads study too, it's only for ad targeting which is in everyones best interest. Google and the Webmaster earn more due to better targeting and the viewers are only shown what they are interested in (most of the time, it does mess up sometimes). Dalton Financial News |

i don't want to be bombarded with any advertising even if its something a computer "thinks" i might want. i have never purchased anything from a website ad or banner.... its just annoys me that all this stuff is set on by default and its up to you to" opt out" therefore i didn't consent to anything because i was blissfully unaware of what was going on... its all part of the same system we all complain about on here... how ironic

The system many of us are annoyed about is the system which relies on violence and coercion to trample the rights and liberties of the people. You should know damn well that websites track you and that you have to opt out of things. It doesn't cost you any money, there are no taxes, you are not forced to give up your information. What you should be concerned about is HOW this information can be or may be used in the future. What is ironic is that someone who claims to understand the problem of the system doesn't understand the basics of how internet advertising has worked for many years. You rant and rave against the system yet you are blissfully unaware of how the internet functions? I think the system should be the least of your worries, perhaps you should focus on understanding the risks of navigating the internet. You might just want to hide in a cave once you discover how much information you have already leaked to multiple sources. If you don't like opting out, then perhaps you should only visit websites that allow you to opt in. Good luck with that. Most websites rely on advertisements, plain and simple. People don't realize how much time and effort goes into maintaining an active website and you better believe that every penny counts. Why offer an opt in policy if that isn't what the majority of visitors demand? It's clear an opt out policy is much more lucrative, sorry that you are annoyed by that, reality is a bitch. |

RE: Are you being watched .....?
Give it two years and the entire internet is going to be flooded with advertisements and monetized. Think 2 years back to how little advertising was on Youtube and look what's happened. Every Joe Schmoe with a video camera and a few subscribers is monetizing their videos. Eventually people will be conditioned to just accept all this advertising and tracking. It's inevitable so I guess we will just have to live with it.
