Anyone else notice when Apmex had the 2012 1/2 oz Silver Fiji Taku for sale but not in stock they were saying that there were only 350,000 of these minted, now in stock and no mention of the mintage. Only the 1oz now says 350,000 minted. Anyone have any thoughts on these coins?

RE: 2012 1/2 oz Silver Fiji Taku
They haven't been in stock at all yet. They just posted the listing. All the big bullion dealers have that problem. They didn't design a button for 'coming soon' so when they add a new listing that hasn't come in yet, they all show sold out. It's very aggravating.

Mintage of 350,000 so they won't disappear immediately I don't think. I'm not getting any.

If you're considering the 2012 1oz coin, get the 2011 instead. Same exact price but a mintage of 20,000 instead of 350,000....

RE: 2012 1/2 oz Silver Fiji Taku
Good to know. I don't think I would get the 2012 1/2 oz Silver Fiji Taku either. But we do have the 1 oz Takus and they're really nice coins. Really nice in person.

RE: 2012 1/2 oz Silver Fiji Taku
The only thing I don't like about the takus is that the queen facing has that weird halo effect. Most don't care about that side of the coin but I do think it will limit it's ultimate premium potential. Collectors don't like flaws, even if every single coin has the flaw. Of course I'm assuming(and you know how I feel about those) that it is indeed a flaw and not as it should be. I certainly don't find it appealing either way.

I never look at the queen side. I've never noticed the flaw. We buy coins then away they go and I don't have them around to look at anymore.

Are you sure the 2011 mintage is 20,000, the reason I ask is that my local coin dealer told me that there was no set mintage for that year. Where did you get that info? |

There was no published maximum mintage, but they stop producing them after the year is over and when they stopped producing, the mintage was approximately 20,000. I got that figure from the new zealand mint's contact e-mail, answered by a new zealand mint representative. I wish the premium was lower on the 1/2 Taku. A bit too high for me, great looking coin though.

RE: 2012 1/2 oz Silver Fiji Taku
It's something to watch. If sales stay slow on the coin it might be a good grab cause that means it won't reach anywhere close to the 350k mintage. The 2012 1/2 oz is the first they've released. Might have some sort of collector's value, might...i'm not holding my breath on this one, but i will keep an eye out for it.

This is my first purchase from APMEX and I was very impressed. |

RE: 2012 1/2 oz Silver Fiji Taku
The more I think about this coin, the more I think it might have potential. I just did a quick search on ebay and the 2010 taku(first year in the series) is selling for about 5-10 bucks more than the 2011(mintage 20,000). The prices are pretty sporadic, but on average, that's what buyers are paying.
This 2012 half-ounce taku is the first 1/2 ounce in the series. It's possible since no one is looking for it, it will end up having a really low mintage and fetch a premium in the future. Just something to watch... Assumptions are the most dangerous things in the universe. |
