It seems the bakers union has struck more than 18,000 people out of a job. Here is an interview with Hostess Brands CEO Gregory Rayburn explaining that a company that cannot deliver product eventually has to shut its doors, a detail that seems to have escaped the union. Hostess was already in bankruptcy and thus had ‘no margin for error’ (in fact, this was the second time in seven years the company has found itself in reorganization proceedings).
Now Hostess Brands is simply forced to liquidate, closing 33 bakeries, three plants, 570 stores and 565 distribution centers. It could be that New York mayor Bloomberg is secretly pleased at this victory in the war against obesity, but the ranks of the disappointed are probably a lot greater.
