While Russian diplomats told a top U.S. diplomat on Friday that they will continue to back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the rebels have fallen into brutal infighting with nearly 500 people killed, according to opposition activists.
U.S. Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman was visiting Moscow ahead of a meeting between Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Paris on Monday.
Russian Deputy Foreign Ministers Mikhail Bogdanov and Gennady Gaitlov, who will also represent Russia at the upcoming Syria talks, delivered the news of the continued support for Assad to Sherman.
Kerry and Lavrov will reportedly focus on the Russian push to give Iran a formal seat at the Geneva 2 conference scheduled for Jan. 22 in Switzerland. The conference will focus on Syria negotiations.
